The annual Hartshorne Memorial Masters Mile races Saturday morning produced two world indoor records — 9:45.24 in W85 by Sandra “Sandy” Folzer of Philadelphia and 15:01.31 in W90 by Edna Hyer of Orchard Park, New York.

Adam Engst, race director and president of the Finger Lakes Runners Club, reports from Cornell University in upstate New York that three USATF officials were on hand for the paperwork.

Results are here.

Adam writes:

In our first race of the day, W85 Sandra Folzer ran a 9:45.24 to bury Ivy Granstrom’s (Canada) previous record of 13:00.96 from 1999 by over 3:15.

(The American record was Tami Graf’s 14:18.28 from 2022, although technically, Edna Hyer broke that last year at Hartshorne with a 14:02.99. Unfortunately, it turned out that our USATF starter hadn’t renewed his certification, so we couldn’t get the record ratified. It would have been short-lived anyway.)

However, W90 Edna Hyer did it again! This year, she ran a 15:01.31 to break Betty Lindberg’s previous 15:15.28 world record from 2019 by almost 14 seconds.

Yowza, these geezerchicks can fly!

The Buffalo News once quoted Edna as saying running has taught her two things: how to spit and how to drink beer.

“She has competed in more than 2,300 races, including 19 this year, the paper said three years ago, adding.

“I don’t enjoy the running part. That’s the hard part,” Hyer said, adding that she’s not a big beer drinker but a cold one tastes good after a race. “I enjoy the friends I have met.”

She has run all distances, from 50 meters to miles-long marathons.

And she recently set a record. She set a USA Track and Field American record for the mile in her age group (85-89) May 21 at the Rochester Mile: 12:05.

Last September, Sandy showed her fitness by chopping a half-hour off the W85 American record in the 12K (just short of 7.5 miles) — lowering the listed record of 1:54:49 to 1:24:42.

Three months later, Sandy ran the 8K (5 miles) in 50 minutes, “shattering the world record for her age group by five minutes and placing in the top quarter of all women participants,” said her local paper.

Isn’t aging up fun?
