O Karla, Karla, Karla! Del Grande claims third W65 WR in 100 at NACAC exhibition

After setting four world records in a couple weeks, what does W65 Karla del Grande do to relax? On Saturday, she jumped into a masters exhibition 100 and lowered her own WR anew. Competing at the NACAC Senior (Kiddie) Championships in Toronto, Karla rode a legal wind to a sizzling 13.91 clocking for third (behind a W40 and W45). Minutes later, M50 Chris Warburton won the men’s race in 11.72 (thanks to an illegal wind of 3 mps.) Also contested were men’s and women’s 800s. And in the open women’s 100, W35 Tahesia Harrigan-Scott of British Virgin Islands clocked a legal 11.61. (She also has a 11.57 this year.)

On Sunday, Karla replied to my congratulatory message: “The NACAC masters exhibition races were invitationals arranged by CMA. They were on the newly resurfaced track at Varsity Stadium which will be used for NCCWMA (I think) and WMA Toronto 2020 (for sure). Doug Smith took pictures. It was great to chase the younger women, and to be seen by some young team mates from my club, and some young kids I have coached, who were there to watch our Canadian elites. I think it’s important to showcase Masters and hopefully interest more people in participating.”

Video of Karla’s race is available, but you have to pay for it. Anyone else have it?

Here are the masters results (and kudos to Delta Timing Group for listing everyone’s age!):

    So extremely fast she is!

  2. As I understand things, Karla is a converted road runner who discovered the sprints later in life. She has wonderful form (see the photo in Ken’s other recent post about her) and can really roll, as evidenced by the 13.91 here and the 28.53 in the 200 a bit earlier. You can do a prolonged search in both Canada and the US and will find exactly 0 people who have anything bad to say about her. Conversely, there are huge numbers of people who will remark on her kindness, pleasant manner, and so forth.
