Bonnie Parrish-Kell of the Nevada Senior Games graciously informs us of a remarkable record in the throws pentathlon set at her USATF-sanctioned meet Oct. 11 at University of Nevada Las Vegas.

“Last month,” she writes, “36 track and field records were set at the Nevada Senior Games, including world and American records in throws pentathlon. William Platts, a 91-year-old from Boise, Idaho, set those records for his age group, and they may stand for quite some time.”

Javelin specialist William — who holds six ARs over age groups M80, M85 and M90 — ran up a score of 4927 crushing the listed world record of 4099 by Russian Borg Stannisius in early 2019 and the American record of 3435 points by George Riser in 2014.

In a 2018 interview with the Idaho Press, he credits his form of “diversity training” that includes outdoor recreation and long walks with helping him stay active.

“You have to make it fun and train like you are old, or you will soon drop out and get in the rocking chair,” he said in the interview.

William’s marks at UNLV:

  • 3-kilo shot put: 8.69 meters (28-6 1/4)
  • 1-kilo discus: 25.16 (82-6 1/2)
  • 3-kilo hammer: 24.28 meters (79-8)
  • 400g javelin: 29.92 meters (98-2)
  • And 12-pound weight: 9.56 meters (31-4 1/2).

His M90 WR in the 400g javelin remains at 31.46 (103-2). (He might have other M80 records from 2013 Olathe nationals, but a sloping field negated them as I wrote back then.)
