Germany’s Guido Müller, 80, retires as greatest long hurdler in masters history

Guido was unbeatable outdoors and tough indoors, especially in the 400-meter flat race, where he has M65 and M75 world records.

Bittersweet news from Germany arrived Monday. The most fantabulous long hurdler in masters history has retired. Dieter Massin writes: “Yesterday, Sunday 14 July, Guido Müller (Mueller) run his last 200m and finished his career in athletics. A wonderful career of a fantastic sportsman ended at the German Masters Championships in Leinefelde.” (See results here.)

I had heard that Guido has been suffering from dementia, so I asked if that was the reason. Dieter replied that he wasn’t sure, but “he was ill for a long time, so that his sports-retirement is the consequence. I respect his decision. Guido was / is a great, fair and clean sportsman. CHAPEAU!”

Guido won the WMA Athlete of the Year award three times — 2004, 2009 and 2014. I saw him set his M60 300H record in Gateshead — 42.31 was breathtaking. He ran so fast my old film camera caught only his lead leg over a final hurdle.

If hurdlers ever have an award, it should be named for GM.

Sad news. I remember the indoor worlds of march 2014 in Budapest, where I watched the 200 finals. Starting with the oldest men, oldest women, one age group younger etcetera. I was sitting next to some young athletes. They were already enjoying all those races, but then came Guido. They were completely blown away, he was so unexpectedly fast! They were not surprised when I told them he was an olympian at the 1972 Munich games.

  2. Guido is my uncle and I am very proud of him not only for his accomplishments but also as a person. He always was great fun to be around him.
